Razib Khan is doing some really interesting stuff. I’d posted a link on this OkCupid info on Facebook, and now that it’s come up again, I wanted to post it here (since this repeats on facebook anyway. I’m still blown away that OkCupid is releasing (and analyzing) all this data, it’s like the fright people are having when they see some of the google search recommendations – it reveals ACTUAL biases and interest instead of the whitewashed versions people are more apt to self-report (though I understand the specific instance below is self-reporting, much of the data on the blog is based on actual interactions).

It’s been a few weeks, but I thought I would point you to an interesting post on OkCupid’s blog about race and dating. They report an interesting trend of preference for white men among all groups of females, as well as lots of other interesting nuggets. Of course, as many have noted the core demographic of OkCupid is a bit different than the general population, and might be especially so when it comes to racial minorities. I did think though that the stated racial preferences of the sample are interesting in light of other data which suggest women are more racialist than men.
In all classes women have stronger same-race preferences than men, except for among Asian women. In previous speed dating studies Asian women were exceptional for showing little racial solidarity with Asian men, so this follows intuition. Also, there is a healthy surplus of males on these dating sites. That might naturally modulate their stated preferences a bit in relation to women.
I am a little bemused by the OkCupid blogger’s outrage at these data. This sort of bias isn’t surprising at all from what I have heard if you’re a colored guy who swaps out your image with a white guy and leaves everything else the same in the biography and preferences, you’re in for a sweet surprise which you’ll never be able to follow up on. Next: OkCupid data shows that nerdier men get fewer responses!
Augh… so the Mayor of Baltimore, Sheila Dixon, has some charges against her. If she’s convicted, the NAACP wants to make sure she’s unable to appoint a white person or a Republican to the job.
We are friendly with the mayor,” said Ronald Patterson Jr.., head of the NAACP’s legal redress committee. “But it appears that there is the possibility she could be convicted, and if so, we want to make sure the law is clear.”
Citing a loophole in the state constitution that would allow the governor to appoint anyone to the city’s highest office if a sitting mayor is convicted of “misconduct,” NAACP officials said they want the law changed to ensure that either the city council president automatically becomes mayor, or that a specially appointed successor could not run in a special election.

11) Environmental Justice must recognize a special legal and natural relationship of Native Peoples to the U.S. government through treaties, agreements, compacts, and covenants affirming sovereignty and self-determination.
(Unless you’re a Native Peoples, you’re not that natural. It’s a fact.)
12) Environmental Justice affirms the need for urban and rural ecological policies to clean up and rebuild our cities and rural areas in balance with nature, honoring the cultural integrity of all our communities, and provided fair access for all to the full range of resources.
(I’m trying to get my head around what would entail “rebuild(ing) our cities and rural areas in balance with nature”. This is very vague, but I’d imagine once we got rid of all radiation, things would revert quite quickly to a more “natural state”. I understand “cultural integrity of all our communities”. Neighborhoods of color need to be protected from interlopers of non-color, or other colors?? Anyway, keep the Chinese in their neighborhood, the blacks in theirs, the hispanics in theirs. You racist whites are segregationists, the people of color merely want to retain the cultural integrity of our communities. There’s a difference, racist!)

Ahh mass transit… multi-cultural and socialist utopia on wheels… they get subsidized by the government because they’re unprofitable. That means that if you have a job and pay taxes, you’re paying twice (three times if you count actually having to ride in them as a form of punishment)! If you don’t use it by walking, riding a bike or driving, you’re being punished only once. You’re almost stealing from the poor!
