I’ve been a publisher, co-owning Scapegoat Publishing and running my own project Underworld Amusements. I’ve also have produced quite a few jacket and full interior and exterior freelance jobs. I prefer to work with publishers creating books on oddball and taboo subjects, though this has left me with a portfolio of work that would turn away most “vanilla” clients.
In personal conversation, when I say “I’m a graphic designer”, people generally don’t know what that means. My quick description is: “Arranging type and graphics so it looks good.”
This means that I’m not an illustrator (something people get stumped on), and many elements of a cover will be provided by the client, and sometimes I have to sub-contract with artists for illustrations/photography or other elements. It’s the skill in pulling these disparate elements together that makes one a designer, and the final product something that looks like a professionally done job.
